SYNOPSIS: Michelle has interviewed more than 200 authors. She first got into podcasting as a guest, promoting her book “Network, Navigate and Nurture: The Equation to Strategic Networking.” Learn from Michelle’s story how to network for success, and how to use podcasting to maximize your networking efforts.
ONE THING ABOUT MICHELLE WE DIDN’T KNOW
A former spelling bee champ, Michelle won third place in her 5th grade glass. She, like Brian, went on to regionals and lost. It still bothers her when others misspell and misuse common words, like “there and their.”
Writing her book, she says, heightened her awareness to proper spelling and grammar. When people would comment on her writing, she jokes that she would think “that’s why I have editors, people! …give me some room!”
WRITING A BOOK
Michelle’s book, Network, Navigate, Nurture: The Equation To Strategic Networking talks about value-based networking, what networking means, what are the best ways to find people, and the nurturing part of networking, which includes finding your mentor, serving as a mentor and building your community.
Now, she has a podcast, “Networking with Michelle.”
MICHELLE, MEET PODCASTS
In 2010, a friend had a sports podcast. but that wasn’t her thing. So, she didn’t even look into podcasting. But, in 2014, when her book was released, she started appearing on different podcasts after signing up on “Radio Guestlist.”
Another Paradiser, Marc Mawhinney suggested to Michelle that she start her own podcast. He was the second to make the comment, “I believe anytime two people say the same thing to you, that’s a confirmation and you need to look into it.”
After Mawhinney suggested it to her in December 2014, she joined Paradise the following month and now, she has over 200 interviews with published authors.
MICHELLE, MARKETING, AND MESSAGE
Explaining that she considers herself to be a natural born marketer, Michelle includes information about her podcast in all her social media and email communications to help promote her show.
Since starting her podcast, she’s found guests on Twitter and Instagram. Even one of her virtual mentors, former WBA fighting champ George Foreman (of Forman Grill fame), appeared on her second podcast episode.
“Don’t be afraid to reach out, to connect to people,” she says. That’s both the lesson from reaching out to Foreman and the lesson she teaches in her podcast.
THE POWER AND PASSION OF “STORY”
College, military, corporate and entrepreneurial experiences inspire Michelle, she says. Plus, she laughs, “I can’t afford these people as coaches, so, now I get free coaching [by having them on the show]!”
“I tell people when I wrote my book, it allowed me to invite myself to your platform. But, now, as a podcaster, I can invite you to my platform.
EXPANDING THE MARKET FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL
Michelle says she uses links to her surveys asking for responses on different topics for her podcast.
Most of her responses come from her newsletter, which she says is more responsive than even her social media outreach.
LONG LIVE LINKED-IN
Michelle also uses her Linked In account to promote her podcast and business. “I’ve received radio interviews and speaking gigs though linked in (as recently as late June).”
EXPANDING PODCASTING ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES
A recent benefit from podcasting for Michelle has come from an interview with a leader in the C-STEM movement, Dr. Ragan Flowers. After the interview, Dr. Flowers asked about podcasting, and as a result, Michelle is consulting her on an upcoming 10-episode project that is underwritten, and focused on the C-STEM curriculum she has written.
She says the podcast is also increasing her opportunities to speak publicly.
THE DISCIPLINE OF PODCASTING
The practice of podcasting is building more discipline into Michelle’s life. “I’ve always had a blog. I’ve always been inconsistent with the blog.” But something about podcasting has held her accountable to make sure the episode is uploaded to LibSyn and the newsletter is ready to go out.
PODCASTERS PARADISE VALUE
The value of Podcasters’ Paradise is what attracted her to the group.
The videos and training available to podcasters, combined with the community were the huge benefits for Michelle. She’s also been able to find new podcasts to be a guest on since being in Paradise.
But, the Facebook Community, she says is the most important to her. By getting answers to her questions, making friends on Facebook, meeting people at events, and growing new relationships with people of like mind, Michelle’s podcast experience has grown in direct proportion to her involvement in the group.
Michelle offers two quotes:
“You never know who you’re going to meet, and that it’s going to lead to.”
“A personal connection leads to an influential network.”
