Sheena Yap Chan is a podcaster (The Tao of Self-Confidence) and blogger with a huge passion for helping women tap into their power with their own inner journey to self-confidence. Sheena says she was once obsessed with Cinderella, thinking she was the princess. She actually sang the song “Cinderella” as a flower girl in a wedding, just before the vows were made.
Her show is all about helping women overcome self-esteem issues and realize their power and what they’re capable of. As an Asian woman, she has lived through the cultural affects of putting women into a lower status.
I WANT WHAT’S BEST
Saying she wanted more than just a job, she wanted to make a difference in the world. The process of moving from working for someone to working for herself, has been a journey that has made her stronger. Her podcast and blog gives her an opportunity to use her life to empower other women in the world.
She admits the journey is a never-ending one, starting with the doubts of her own value, the struggle of over-complication. Sheena also says she gets encouraged by those women she interviews, as well.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE PODCAST
Sheena points to an interview she had recently with a lady who left a 6-figure income to start her own business during the economic crash of 2008. Fighting against the criticisms of her friends, this woman struggled through three business failures to finally restore her income and continue to grow.
GETTING INTO PODCASTS
Sheena never new of podcasting until a friend introduced her to EOFire. Then, she signed up for John Lee Dumas’ Free Podcast Course, when she thought it would be a great medium for encouraging women on a regular basis.
Later, she joined Podcasters’ Paradise and launched her show in August, 2015.
HOW TO BUILD A PODCAST AUDIENCE
Sheena is building her audience by knowing her listeners through various methods. Included in her list of tools are:
- Market Research
- Personal Experience
- Blog Articles in Her Niche
- Questions and Answers With Other Women
KEYS TO BEING A SUCCESSFUL PODCASTER
Offering several nuggets of wisdom for women struggling with self-confidence, Sheena reminds us, “if you can’t handle the small things, how do you expect to handle the bing things,” and “being clever doesn’t get you anywhere. Being clear is essential.”
Speaking of being clever, Sheena’s first idea for a podcast title was “The Stripper.” After being advised that the wrong idea might be communicated by the title, she eventually came up with “The Tao of Self-Confidence.” The title, says, host Brian Kane really defines the subject, resonates with Sheena’s Asian heritage, and resonates with the listener.
BIGGEST SUCCESS MOMENT OF THE PODCAST
Sheena’s biggest success from her new podcast is the first sign-up for a newsletter she hadn’t even promoted. Actually, the lesson to be positive and not limit her beliefs comes from that sign-up.
Additionally, she learned what it is to celebrate as a win as a new podcaster. You’ll have to listen to the interview to learn this lesson. Sheena says, “even if I have to start over every single day, I’d rather do that than go back to where I was before…there’s no such thing as failure, there’s only feedback.”
